Qatar’s Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning has outlined where areas where labour accommodation is banned.
The ministry published a number of maps on its website outlining the areas that were strictly reserved for “family housing”, according to a report in Doha News.
The areas reserved include the majority of central Doha, and areas in Al Wakrah, Al Khor, Umm Salal and sections of Al Rayyan and Al Shahaniyah.
Similar to ‘bachelor bans’ in Kuwait and Bahrain, the measures have been established to discourage single men from living in homes built for families. While the law in Qatar was passed in 2010, and came into effect the following year, the maps represent the first move to implement the legislation. The penalties for violating the law are fines of up to QR50,000 ($13,728) for first offence and up to QR100,000 ($27,457) for repeat offences.
