Alcatel has struck a deal with Jordan Telecom to supply over 90,000 telephone lines to the country. Jordan’s national operator has awarded a contract for the supply, installation and commissioning of Alcatel 1000 switching exchanges along with the upgrading and expansion of its existing network.
The new lines will be provided for Amman and its outlying areas and for the Karak and Tafileh provinces in the south of Jordan. The Amman exchange is expected to be operational by the end of April.
“The new Alcatel 1000 MM exchanges will respond to the customers’ increasing demands following the telecommunications service explosion,” said Pierre Mattei, CEO of Jordan Telecom.
The move is likely to mean an improvement in Internet services for the people of Jordan. Alcatel’s 1000 MM system uses a packet technology in its core fabric to provide operators with high speed Internet access and multimedia services.
It will also be able to process large volumes of Internet-generated traffic and ADSL-based multimedia applications in addition to handling high-added-value voice services for Jordan Telecom’s customers.
“With this new system, Jordan Telecom will be able to offer new services to its subscribers as it modernises and optimises its network architecture,” said Jean Lailheugue, vice president of sales for switching and routing activities, Alcatel.
