BenQ fires latest salvo in response time war of words

BenQ is the latest LCD display vendor to claim the “world’s fastest response time” title following the launch of its new 20-inch, wide-screen PC monitor, the FP202W.

BenQ is the latest LCD display vendor to claim the “world’s fastest response time” title following the launch of its new 20-inch, wide-screen PC monitor, the FP202W.

An LCD display’s response time refers to the time needed to switch between the highest and lowest level colours (white to black), with a quicker time meaning a monitor is better suited to fast-flowing graphics use.

It is this particular performance statistic that has been the real LCD battleground of late as manufacturers have consistently claimed lower and lower figures.

BenQ claims its new product is the world’s fastest thanks to its claimed eight-millisecond (ms) response time. However, this statistic is in stark contrast to those claimed by the firm’s competitors, as both Samsung and Viewsonic this summer unveiled models that they claim offer response rates of as little as 4ms.

“The FP202W demonstrates BenQ’s ambition to provide products that not only enhance the digital life of our customers but also blend into people’s style of living,” said Robert Dung, managing director, BenQ Middle East.

“Our line of products for 2006 will break records and set trends in the region, and we anticipate increasing our share of the LCD market significantly over the coming months,” he added.

In addition to its touted 8ms response time, BenQ’s FP202W features a 1,680 x 1,050 pixel maximum image resolution and a 600:1 contrast ratio. It also features a hotkey that allows instant switching between analog and digital signal inputs, plus of course the firm’s proprietary ‘Senseye’ digital-enhancement technology. This automatically improves image quality, adjusts brightness and darkness levels, performs colour mapping, and reduces jagged edges on images.

BenQ will now promote and sell its super-quick model across the UAE and wider Gulf via the power retailer channel. The FP202W should retail for around US $734.
