Google announces “First Annual Google Programming Contest”

To celebrate more than 3 years of success as a search engine, Google has announced the launch of the First Annual Google Programming Contest.

The geek community has something challenging to look forward to this season. A notice from Google.com has announced that it is sponsoring the First Annual Google Programming Contest to celebrate “more than three years of delivering the best search experience on the Internet.” And the winner will be awarded US $10,000.Applicants will be provided with a selection of about 900,000 web pages in pre-parsed and raw format, together with a “ripper” programme that provides a framework for processing the pre-parsed data. Candidates will need to write a programme, essentially add to the ripper, so that the data can be scaled to a web-sized collection of documents. The programme will be judged based on its general utility and importance of output, scalability and elegance of design and the portability of implementation. More than one entry is permitted and all entries are due by April 30, 2002.
