Mall of Qatar opening delayed to Q3 2016

Doha developers say the delay is to allow more time for tenant fit out

The developer of Doha’s the Mall of Qatar has confirmed it has delayed the opening of the mega facility until the end of the third quarter of 2016.

The mall, which is owned and developed by Mall of Qatar W.L.L in collaboration with turnkey contractors UrbaCon Trading & Contracting (UCC), was scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2016, after developers announced a delay to the original opening date of Q3 this year.

Shem Krey, managing director of Mall of Qatar, said they decided to move the opening date to Q3 in order to allow more time for the tenant fit out.

“It’s a nice problem to have,” Krey said. “The reasons for the shift are a result of the recent success in leasing more than 300 shops since January 2015.”

With 256,000 square metres of leasable space on three levels, and over 500 retail stores, Mall of Qatar has leased 85 percent of its tenancy space.

He said the influx of key tenants has meant they will require more time to incorporate the required designs.

“We are going to have some of the best flagship stores in the region, more importantly, with unique designs exclusive to the Mall of Qatar that will require more fit out time. In the long run, our promise to deliver a unique customer experience will be realised with Carrefour, Salam, Hamley’s to name a few fit outs that will be outstanding experiences,” said Krey.

He added that Mall of Qatar will announce new leases in the near future. “We will announce our leasing success in due time. We are passionate about the ‘Nation’s Mall’,” he said.

With 75 percent of construction work completed, UrbaCon Trading and Contracting will complete the core and shell on schedule, as previously planned in March 2016.
