Saudi Arabia has announced it will celebrate Flag Day on March 11 and that it is to become an annual event.

The announcement was made by King Salman bin Abdulaziz and reported by state-run news agency SPA.

The Flag Day will be marked every year and honoured as an opportunity in the Kingdom to recognise the nation’s flag and celebrate national pride.

The date was chosen to mark the day that the former King, Abdulaziz Al Saud authorised the flag as a representation of the Kingdom.

“The value of the national flag extends throughout the history of the Saudi state, since its founding in 1139 AH – 1727 AD, which bears the Islamic declaration of faith in the middle, symbolizing the message of peace, and the religion of Islam, on which this blessed state was based,” SPA reported.

On February 22 the Kingdom celebrated its second Founding Day with celebrations across the country and a four-day weekend. Founding Day was declared as a national holiday in Saudi Arabia last year, after the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman issued a royal decree to mark the occasion.
