The UAE’s General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Endowments (GAIAE) has denied reports that it has banned the public use of vuvuzelas.
It said in a statement that the horns used by spectators in stadiums during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa had not been prohibited and that media reports were “inaccurate”.
In a clarification statement published by news agency WAM, the GAIAE said the published reports on the issue had “distorted and twisted” the text of the fatwa (religious ruling) and gave a misleading impression to readers.
The GAIAE affirmed that the fatwa, which was posted on its website on June 2 2010, does not forbid the vuvuzela.
On the contrary, the GAIAE said, it sanctions their use and the sale of them.
The fatwa allows the use of the horns in stadiums and the sale of them in the UAE but the importer or trader “should make sure of the magnitude of their sound scale so as not to cause loud noises that harm people”.
