The Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), the Ministry of Education in India, and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) have signed a partnership to create the first international campus of IIT Delhi, known as IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi.
The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) took place in the presence of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The agreement reflects the shared commitment of both nations to prioritise educational excellence, innovation, knowledge exchange, and investments in human capital as the building blocks for future prosperity and sustainable development, a statement by WAM said.
The MoU was signed by Sara Musallam, Minister of State for Early Education and Chairwoman of ADEK; Sunjay Sudhir, Indian Ambassador to the UAE; and Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT-Delhi.
Musallam stressed on the significance of the MoU in Abu Dhabi’s pursuit of a world-class education system aligned with national development goals.
She said: “This MoU represents our commitment to providing world-class educational experiences. We anticipate that the IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi partnership will support our transition towards fostering an environment that nurtures innovation and accelerates high-level research.”
Dharmendra Pradhan, Cabinet Minister for Education, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship in the Government of India, praised the agreement as a major development that strengthens bilateral ties between the UAE and India while enriching the UAE’s higher education landscape.
He described the IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi campus as an “edifice of friendship” and a model for leveraging knowledge for mutual prosperity and global good.
The establishment of IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi will enhance the academic, research, and innovation ecosystem in Abu Dhabi through collaborations with prominent institutions such as the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Khalifa University, New York University Abu Dhabi, Technology Innovation Institute, and Hub71.
The campus is set to launch academic programs in January 2024, offering a diverse range of bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. programs in various disciplines, including energy and sustainability, artificial intelligence, computer science and engineering, mathematics and computing, and other fields of engineering, sciences, and humanities.
Graduates from IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi will join a network of alumni from the 23 campuses across India.
With its ranking among the world’s top 50 institutions for engineering and technology, and recognition for global employability, IIT-Delhi has made significant contributions to India’s research and development ecosystem across various sectors.
The UAE has also partnered with India to use local currencies for bilateral, cross-border payments on Saturday.
