All ongoing and soon to be launched mega projects in Qatar will be completed by 2026, according to a senior official.
This is the target date for multi-billion dollar projects to transform the Gulf state’s transportation system, including a metro system, Ibrahim Abbass, infrastructure and transportation planning director at the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning (MMUP) said.
“We are planning to have connected roads soon for easy access to any part of the country. We are also working on underground and surface metro as well as improved bus transportation to encourage more people to use public vehicles,” he said in comments published by Gulf Times.
“Though this seems ambitious, we intend to achieve all our plans on the country’s updated masterplan by 2026 and before then, every five years, we will commission a new package of project, especially road projects,” he told the paper.
The official said the municipality would establish a transport system based on international standards with a target of 20 percent of all residents using public transport in the future.
He said the bike lanes would also be included on major and minor roads in an effort to make Doha accessible for all types of road users.
Abbass also told the paper that the construction of Al Rayyan road and Doha Bay projects “will beautify the whole city and ease traffic congestion”.
