Diet Pepsi recall in Abu Dhabi

The drinks giant has issued a product recall because of defective cans.

Diet Pepsi cans have been pulled off the shelves in Abu Dhabi after the linings of some cans were found to be disintegrating, WAM reported yesterday.

Abu Dhabi’s Food Control Authority (FCA) announced that they discovered the manufacturing defect after running tests on Diet Pepsi cans that were reported to be peeling by a customer.

Mohammed Jalal Al Riyaysa, FCA’s director of communications and information, told Gulf News that the FCA ran tests after a resident in Al Ain complained of finding a plastic-like substance in his Diet Pepsi.

The same substance was found in other cans from the No. 7022 batch bottled on 22 January 2007.

The Pepsi Cola company recalled the batch after FCA lab results confirmed that scales on the inside surface of the cans were mixing with the liquid.

Mr. Al Riyaysa also said that the lab did a random sample test of the soft drink as a precautionary measure, but found that the contaminated cans were only in the batch already recalled, Emirates Today reported.

Officials from Pepsi Cola and the can manufacturer said that the problem occurred because of a sudden power cut at the kiln where the tins are dried, according to WAM.
