Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) opened two new bridges on Saturday as part of the improvement of the Sheikh Rashid-Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed streets intersection.
The first bridge on Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street has two lanes going in each direction, with a second one-lane bridge stretching from Zabeel Street to the direction of Sheikh Zayed Street.
According to RTA, the bridges will help ease traffic headed towards Al Karama and the World Trade Center junction in the direction of Sheikh Zayed Road. The tunnel is expected to be opened in both directions in Q2 2018.
“The intersection of Sheikh Rashid and Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Streets is a key part of a big project for improving [the] Al Shandagha roads network,” said RTA director-general and chairman of the board Mattar Al Tayer.
Al Tayer added that the “project is part of RTA’s master plan for the improvement of roads, bridges, crossings and underpasses to accommodate the growing traffic volumes, and ease the traffic movement in all parts of Dubai.
“It is also part of the overall efforts to implement RTA’s strategic plan for upgrading roads and transport infrastructure in Dubai,” he added. “The objective is to develop integrated solutions…that are safe for users, capable of matching to the development plans and demographic growth, and encouraging development and investment in Dubai.”
The construction of the Sheikh Rashid-Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed streets intersection project is in tandem with improvements to the Wafi intersection project, which will include a three-lane bridge from Oud Metha Street near Latifa Hospital to Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Saa’da street, with the upper deck leading to the Dubai World Trade Center.
