Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the US needs to “catch up” with advancements seen at Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi.

His remark was in response to a video showcasing the airport’s use of facial recognition technology for check-ins.

“US does need to catch up,” Musk said via X (formerly known as Twitter).

Zayed International Airport uses facial recognition for flight check-in

Zayed International Airport, previously known as Abu Dhabi International, opened its new Terminal A in November.

It was rebranded in honour of the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, aligning with the nation’s vision as a technology and aviation hub.

Passengers who check-in online can use self-service desks equipped with facial recognition to complete checks. This allows some passengers to get from the terminal curb to the gate in 12 minutes.

Terminal A spans 742,000 square metres and can process up to 11,000 passengers per hour.

It has a capacity for 45 million passengers annually and can handle 79 aircraft simultaneously. In addition to its scale, the terminal features 163 food, beverage and retail outlets.

The airport aims to expand capacity to 65 million passengers over the next decade.
