The board of India’s largest airline IndiGo is reportedly likely to approve an order for 500 Airbus A320neo family aircraft on Monday.
If approved, the IndiGo order will be worth over $50 billion at list price, surpassing Air India’s 470 aircraft order placed in March to become the largest order in aviation history.
The actual amount, however, could be much less than the $50 billion face value price as such large orders are known to enjoy heavy discounts, the Economic Times (ET) reported.
IndiGo’s A320neo fleet expansion
The A320neo family consists of the A320neo, A321neo and A321XLR aircraft.
By 2030, IndiGo will have received 477 aircraft from the same A320 generation. With this purchase, the airline will be able to increase its fleet without interruption over the course of the next ten years.
The fresh order move comes amid IndiGo garnering over 60 percent of the Indian market last month in the wake of the grounding of Go First, another Indian carrier.
The carrier took advantage of the situation by starting additional routes.
Airlines around the world have been ordering a slew of brand-new aircraft, packing Airbus and Boeing’s order books, following a rapid rebound in air travel after post-Covid.
