Roads in the UAE will be closed on Saturday, December 17 and motorists are urged to check their journeys before setting off to avoid rerouted traffic.
The Integrated Transport Centre has announced major roads will be closed off for the Adnoc Abu Dhabi Marathon.
With 20,000 runners expected to take part in the event, eight major roads will close in Abu Dhabi to accommodate athletes and spectators.
UAE road closures
Roads will close from midnight until 1pm on Saturday, December 17.
The event, which will cover a 42 kilometres route, starting from ADNOC Headquarters, and taking its way through some of the most remarkable landmarks in the UAE – including the Crown Prince Court, Al Bateen Palace, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Hosn, and the World Trade Centre Abu Dhabi, ADNOC said in a statement.
Abu Dhabi road closures:
- Road near Emirates Palace: 12am-9am
- Abu Dhabi Corniche: 2am to 1pm
- Bateen: 4.30am to 7.30am
- Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street: 5am to 9am
- Near Sheikh Zayed Mosque: 5.45am to 9.30am
- Sheikh Rayed Mosque road: 6am to 9.50am
- Sultan bin Zayed The First: 6.10am to 11am
- Road near Al Wahda Mall to Al Hosn: 6.15am to 12pm
The ITC has urged all road users to drive cautiously and abide by traffic rules and regulations.
Ethiopian Adeladlew Mamo, winner of this year’s Seville Marathon, has been added to a world class field alongside Kenyan pair Daniel Kibet, winner of the 2019 Istanbul Marathon, and Dickson Chumba, champion in Tokyo in 2015 and 2018, as well as Chicago in 2015.
Moreover, Olympian Eunice Chumba has also been added to the elite runners line-up for the UAE race.
She will be looking to add the Abu Dhabi title to a collection that includes the 2017 Beirut Marathon.
Chumba will face competition from, among others, 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Mare Dibaba of Ethiopia and Kenya’s Angela Tanui, winner of the Amsterdam 2021 Marathon.
