Sama launches charter service to Abu Dhabi

Service marks first time KSA-based carrier has operated internationally.

Saudi Arabia-based budget carrier Sama has started operating an international charter service to Abu Dhabi International Airport (ADIA).

The low cost carrier (LCC) now operates seven flights a week linking Abu Dhabi with Riyadh and Dammam.

The routes are served by Boeing 737-300 aircraft, which are maintained to the highest international standards by SR Technics.

Meeting the carrier at Abu Dhabi after its maiden flight on Thursday, Mohammed Al Katheeri, deputy chief operating officer of Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) said passenger traffic between Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi had increased 74% during the last 12 months, from 179,098 to 310,835.

“Sama will add much needed new capacity to this route. This is a welcome development for us because it serves our strategy of catering to all categories of travelers through Abu Dhabi International Airport,” he said.

Andrew Cowen, CEO of Sama, added: “We are happy to help meet the growing traffic between Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi. Our low-fare services will appeal to a large sector of business and tourist travelers between Saudi Arabia and the UAE capital.”
