A gang of UAE residents have been arrested following an investigation into illegal car smuggling.
Sharjah police swooped after finding the car which were stolen from US and shipped to the UAE. Several arrests were made in connection with the theft, while international police bureau Interpol are tracking down other suspects abroad.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Sharjah police were tipped off that the two suspects were trying to sell two Mercedes 550 models.
Informers suspected the two cars were stolen from US and exported to the UAE. After verification of the report, a security squad was set up to follow the case and monitor the suspects, who took the cars to a technical check up centre before selling them to some buyers.
It was discovered that changes has been made to the chassis numbers of the two cars and two suspects, both Pakistanis, were arrested.
By searching the two cars, police found documents and seals relating to a spare parts shop operating in the emirates.
Police also found out a third suspect and car, a BMW, at a car showroom in Abu Shaggara district in Sharjah.
Interrogated, the two accused admitted their roles in the crime and admitted they would have smuggled more cars in the future, police said.
They were remanded in custody, pending trial. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior is working closely with Interpol to hunt down other suspects.
