GCC chief wants to see more women in top jobs

GCC secretary general says women’s representation still ‘below ambitions’.

GCC Secretary General Abdulrahman Al-Attiyah has admitted more needs to be done to empower women and create more opportunities for them in the region’s top jobs.

He said Gulf women’s representation in leading posts was still “below ambitions” and “did not match their scientific and practical achievements”.

Addressing the inaugural session of a seminar on the role of women in GCC member states on Saturday, he added that women had proved capable of shouldering their responsibilities “as partners in the march of national development”.

“Despite the remarkable achievements attained as regards enabling women to play their role as effective partners in the development process with its comprehensive concept, we have to admit that the way is still so long,” he said in comments published by KUNA News Agency.

“The representation of women in the key posts is still below our ambitions and does not conform to the big strides that have been made by women in the scientific and practical domains,” he added.

The GCC chief said “tireless efforts” to enable women to effectively participate in the development process of the region would continue and were viewed as a “major pillar for the modernisation of the GCC communities”.

He said women who enjoy their full rights were “capable of positively contributing to the development of the community”.
