Hospitals should prioritise hiring high-level doctors and use AI technology to their advantage to stay ahead of a rapidly changing healthcare landscape, Sherif Beshara, Group CEO of American Hospital Dubai, told Arabian Business.
“To achieve success, investing in the right people is crucial. By having the right individuals, we can harness their caliber, strategic thinking, and management skills to drive progress. When it comes to our medical staff, it is essential that 100 percent of our doctors on campus are highly qualified consultants, ensuring the highest level of expertise and care,” he said.
Beshara’s comments came on the sidelines of the 2024 edition of Arab Health held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
When asked how the hospital retains itself in a highly competitive sector, Beshara said it prioritises providing the best service to patients over engaging in commercial competition.
“Our focus lies in delivering exceptional healthcare and staying at the forefront of medical advancements. We believe that competition goes beyond financial gains and instead centers on offering our patients the latest technology and advancements. While we are a private hospital and seek profitability, our primary profit is derived from the quality of care we provide. We firmly believe that prioritising quality and adhering to high standards will naturally lead to long-term success and sustainability. This commitment to excellence sets American Hospital apart from other healthcare institutions,” he said.
Expansion plans in Dubai and globally
American Hospital Dubai, which also prioritises training and cultural acceptance, revealed that the hospital plans to introduce a medical college in the UAE, clinics and hospitals in Africa and CIS countries, and Dubai.
“Our primary objective is to establish ourselves as part of the best medical tourism destination by 2030. We are committed to taking early action and not just discussing initiatives without implementation. As evidence of this, we have already opened a new medical representative office in Nigeria to promote Dubai as a leading destination for medical tourism. It is just the beginning, as we plan to open three more offices in 2024 and aim to have 30 offices across West Africa and CIS countries.
“Moreover, we have made significant progress towards our objective with an initial agreement. Through this agreement, we will introduce Baylor Medical College, renowned for its expertise in cardiology, to Dubai. This collaboration will allow us to establish a campus in the heart of UAE, owned by the American Hospital. Moreover, the graduates of Baylor Dubai Campus will be recognised as local medical graduates, making it the first American medical school in the world to receive such a privilege. This milestone reflects our dedication to providing exceptional medical education and services,” he said.

Leveraging technology
The hospital recently acquired the first Spine Surgical Robot, making it the leading private healthcare provider in the Middle East to introduce this advanced technology.
Investing in cutting-edge medical equipment is part of the hospital’s ongoing commitment to prioritise its people-first service objective. Moreover, Beshara said that the hospital remains dedicated to continually investing in technology to enhance patient care and stay at the forefront of medical innovation.
American Hospital, which also stands out as a trailblazer in the healthcare industry through introducing the latest technology in robotic surgeries, believes in a culture of embracing and harnessing the power of AI.
“We firmly believe technology, including AI, can significantly enhance patient care and outcomes. One of the critical advantages of American Hospital is our commitment to training and educating various healthcare professionals on the latest technology. As a private institution, we take pride in offering comprehensive training programs to surgeons from the region, enabling them to utilise robotic surgical systems proficiently.
“We also prioritise the integration of AI in healthcare, going beyond investment by actively encouraging our staff to study AI in healthcare, sponsored by our collaboration with esteemed institutions like MIT,” he said. He added that American Hospital is the only hospital in the UAE with a dedicated governance department focusing on various aspects, including quality assurance, risk management, and overall governance.
“What sets us apart is that our entire leadership and management team in the governance department consists of professionals who have graduated from and worked extensively in the United States. This unique expertise and experience enable us to confidently assert that American Hospital upholds the highest American standards within the UAE healthcare landscape,” he concluded.
