Etihad Airways said on Thursday that it has received verbal notification from South African Airways of its intent to cancel a codeshare agreement with the Abu Dhabi carrier.
Etihad Airways said in a statement that passengers who are currently booked on flights operated by South African Airways will be honoured up until the completion of the contractual arrangement.
The statement from Etihad followed a report by Bloomberg saying that South African Airways will cancel the codesharing agreement with Etihad.
The South African carrier and Etihad signed the partnership in May 2013 before expanding the alliance with additional routes and the daily Johannesburg to Abu Dhabi flight from March last year.
Bloomberg said South African Airways will stop operating the Abu Dhabi flight from March 1, after getting approval for the move from South Africa’s National Treasury as the route hasn’t performed as expected.
At the time of the deal, Etihad Airways and South African Airways said they would continue to explore areas for further cooperation, including joint sales and marketing programs and the coordination of procurement, facilities and airport operations.
