Oman has announced holiday dates for the upcoming Eid Al Adha for public and private sectors in the country.
Employees at public authorities, state departments and private companies can enjoy days off from work starting Sunday August 19 until Thursday August 23. Work will resume Sunday August 26.
Those operating in the private sector, however, must be compensated for their holiday if their weekly day off coincides with it.
Eid Al Adha is one of the Islamic calendar’s two most important happenings. It translates into “Festival of Sacrifice” and marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah.
It is best known for honouring Prophet Ibrahim’s readiness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, following which God provides a male goat to be sacrificed instead.
As a tribute to the event, sheep and goats are sacrificed and their meet divided into three parts. One share is given to the poor, another to relatives and the third remains for the family.
Eid Al-Adha begins with morning prayers and continues with celebratory visits to friends and family, where gifts and feasts are exchanged.
