The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has completed a project to upgrade 900 lighting units along 9km of Sheikh Rashid Street to LED lights.

Sheikh Rashid Street is a key road passing through the city across 10 lanes.

The upgrades were conducted in three phases over six months from Deira to the intersection with Sheikh Khalifa Street.

This project supports Dubai’s plan to reduce energy consumption and promote sustainability. It will help the UAE achieve targets set in the Sustainability Initiative 2024.

“The project involved re-engineering the street lighting to incorporate sustainable and energy-efficient LED lighting according to the best practices for maintaining our assets and commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection in Dubai and the UAE,” Abdullah Lootah, Director of Road and Facilities Maintenance at RTA said.

The new LED lights provide twice as much brightness as conventional lights, with a brightness of 4,000 units compared to 2,000 units, according to Lootah. This effectively doubles the quality of lighting.

He added that LED lights produce less heat and are free from harmful materials.

“Brightness and colour clarity is improved, enhancing nighttime visibility and safety. LED lights provide twice the brightness of conventional lights,” he explained adding that this upgrade aligns with RTA’s commitment to developing roads and infrastructure with innovative, climate-suited solutions that support sustainability goals.
