Dubai authorities have warned UAE residents to avoid reckless driving over the National Day weekend, amid increased police supervision of busy roads and streets during the celebrations.
The emirate’s authorities plan to bump up their patrol of main roads from 4pm until late on both Friday and Saturday, the director of the Dubai traffic department said.
Through their “excessive presence”, police hope to minimise road accidents and stop motorists breaking traffic laws, said Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin.
Authorities will also focus on easing traffic jams, with additional patrols assigned to popular areas including Al Diyafa Street, Jumeirah Beach Road, Al Sufouh and Al Warqaa.
Other police authorities, such as Abu Dhabi Police and Ras Al Khaimah police, have also issued warnings ahead of the holiday period.
In the UAE capital, police sent out 40,000 emails last month cautioning residents about anti-social behaviour and dangerous car decorations which obstruct vision or stuck out, local media reported.
Fines of up to Dh2,000 and 12 black points, could be issued if motorists were caught breaching traffic rules, the emails said.
RAK Police have also issued a statement to drivers urging them to ensure decorations are not offensive and do not cover license plates.
