GMG, an Emirati-owned retail group, has inaugurated a Himalayan pink salt manufacturing facility in the UAE, as it looks to capture gains in the multi-billion dollar trade.
The new fully automated factory, which the retailer claims to be the second biggest in the world, has a capacity of 70,000 metric tons and can produce around 200,000 kilograms of Himalayan pink salt per day.
“This is a proud moment for us at GMG, as we open the world’s second-largest Himalayan pink salt manufacturing facility by capacity in the UAE and introduce our latest brand, Sapora,” Mohammad A Baker, chief executive of GMG, said in a statement.
The Himalayan pink salt market was worth $10.63 billion in 2020, according to Maximize Market Research, and it is projected to grow at 4.2 percent to hit $14.18 billion in the next five years.
The retailer, which distributes a variety of well-known brands in the UAE including sports shop Sun and Sand, also has a sprawling portfolio in food manufacturing and distribution.
Aside from the new factory in Jebel Ali, GMG is also planning to build production lines for herbs and spices to be completed by early 2023.
“This is only the beginning, as we set another benchmark for food manufacturing systems in the region,” Baker said.
As of writing, GMG now has six food factories in the UAE, producing major product lines including meat and seafood.
