Apple suffered a 12-hour blackout on its iTunes and App Store servers yesterday because of an internal DNS error, Reuters reported.

The Cupertino company brought systems back online at around 5pm Eastern Time after a prolonged outage that began just before 5am. Users tweet their frustration using hashtags such as #itunesdown and #appstoresdown.

Apple’s revenue from services, including its cut of downloads from iTunes and the App Store, was almost $4.8bn in its fiscal first quarter, or more than 6% of overall sales.

The downtime follows a similar incident in September, according to AppleInsider. Apple issued an apology for users, but shares closed 1.8% lower at $122.24 yesterday.
