Over 80 female taxi drivers will be hired soon in the four main airports in Saudi Arabia.

The airports include the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, and Prince Muhammad International Airport in Madinah.

The move is part of the first phase of an initiative, launched on Sunday by Saudi Arabia’s Transport General Authority (TGA), in cooperation with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD), represented by the Tawteen Programme-2, to empower women in the fields of transport, Saudi Gazette said, citing the Al-Watan newspaper.

The phase, which is titled ‘Woman’s Track,’ three agreements will be signed with major companies, which are licensed to operate airport taxis, to employ over 80 female drivers, starting from four airports.

For the second phase of the initiative, female taxi drivers will be employed in all other airports in the Kingdom.

“The initiative includes cooperation with a specialised driving center to prepare and develop a comprehensive training programme for acquiring basic skills in driving cabs, in addition to soft skills such as decorum, customer service, first aid, and the English language,” the report said.

This also includes providing support through the Tawteen Programme-2 to empower national cadres and to support the development of the transport and logistics services sector as well as to improve the experience of beneficiaries, including visitors and travelers, the report added.

The TGA also emphasised that their new initiative aims to improve and develop transportation services and enhance the passenger experience to ensure the continuity of business.

This is part of their efforts to support job creation, increase local participation, and promote the involvement of women in Saudisation programmes within the transportation sector and its companies.

These efforts are expected to have a positive impact on the country’s GDP. The TGA and MRHSD are also working towards localising jobs in the transport and logistics sector with this initiative being one of several initiatives aimed at empowering women in various fields, in line with the National Strategy for Transport and Logistics Services and the goals of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.
