TikTok is finally winding up operations in India, as the ByteDance-owned short video app has reportedly fired all employees at its India office.

As many as 40 employees of the Chinese social media firm in India have been given pink slips on Monday after a call, the Economic Times (ET) reported, quoting unnamed sources.

The employees have been offered up to nine months of severance pay.

TikTok has confirmed shutting down its India office.

“We have taken the decision to close our India remote sales support hub, which was put in place at the end of 2020 to provide support to our global and regional sales teams. We greatly appreciate these employees and their impact on our company, and will ensure they are supported at this difficult time,” the company spokesperson said in a statement, media reports said.

The ET report said employees were told that February 28 will be their last day in office.

India’s TikTok ban

TikTok’s move comes after it was banned by the Indian government three year ago.

Besides TikTok, about 300 other Chinese apps were banned by India in phases starting from June 2020, citing national security concerns.

After the ban, several of the employees in the India office of the company were mostly working in the UAE and Brazialian markets.

Earlier this month, a short video-sharing app elevated Sameer Singh as the head of global business solutions in North America. Singh joined TikTok in 2019.

TikTok had a massive user base in India and was its second biggest market outside China when the ban was announced.

The short-format video producer provided employment opportunities to people from all walks of life.
