Kuwait and India have agreed to a ‘strategic partnership’ and cooperation in various fields.
This was said in a joint statement following the official visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a special invitation of His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Meshal Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
During the two-day visit, PM Modi was granted the ‘Mubarak Al-Kabeer Order’, a knighthood order of Kuwait awarded to Heads of State and foreign sovereigns and members of foreign royal families. Previous recipients of the Order include leaders like Bill Clinton, Prince Charles and George Bush.
“I am honoured to be conferred the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Order by His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al Sabah. I dedicate this honour to the people of India and to the strong friendship between India and Kuwait,” Modi said on X.
An official meeting was held during which views on multilateral international and regional issues of common concern were discussed.
Kuwait’s Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah held official talks with his Indian counterpart. Both sides renewed their commitment to boosting bilateral ties through comprehensive and organised cooperation in political, trade, investment, defense, security, energy, culture, education and technology.
The statement said that the two sides formed a joint cooperation committee (JCC) that will work as a constitutional mechanism to review and follow all aspects of bilateral relations. The committee will be co-chaired by the foreign ministers of the two countries.
Kuwait also expressed interest in investing in the Indian economy. Some of the opportunities discussed included technology, infrastructure, tourism, healthcare, food security and logistic services. The two countries also agreed to strengthen cooperation and partnership in energy, oil, gas, and renewable energy.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed that will provide the required framework for boosting ties on joint military exercises, maritime defense, and other related areas. Both countries condemned terrorism in all forms and discussed cybersecurity and preventing e-space from being used for terrorism and extremism.
Kuwait expressed appreciation for cooperation during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the possibility of setting up an Indian factory to manufacture medicine in Kuwait was explored.
Prime Minister Modi conveyed his appreciation to Kuwait’s leadership for its interest in the care and welfare of the Indian community in Kuwait.
