Expatriates’ wives or husbands accompanying them in Saudi Arabia can be hired under “certain conditions,” according to a report by the Saudi Gazette. The same applies for a “close blood-relative” of expatriate working women as well.

The move was approved by the kingdom’s Minister of Human Resources and Social Development the authority to employ companions of expatriate workers in the kingdom, and is part of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to expand economic activities and professions.

However, the ministry said that they must be qualified in “various specialisations and field” required for the job, and their appointment will be an “alternative to recruitment of actually required job vacancy and that will be compatible with the terms and conditions of the Nitaqat Saudisation programme.”

The companion’s employer must fulfill all the recruitment conditions, as well as for practicing the profession, which requires the companion to pass a qualifying test.

“It is also stipulated in the conditions that it is not allowed to employ companions in the jobs that are reserved for Saudi men and women according to the lists available at the ministry,” the report said.
