A South African woman has become the first female to swim around the Palm Jumeirah.
Kieran Ballard-Tremeer completed the 14.5km-distance swim around the iconic landmark in a time of four hours and 28 minutes, swimming inside the breakwater of Palm Jumeirah.
The 38-year-old teacher trained for three months in order to get ready for the challenge, which she used to raise funds for Emirates Red Crescent.
She told Gulf News that she used to dread heading out to sea, but has become more comfortable since moving to Dubai.
“I came from a background where I don’t even put my foot in the water because we have great white sharks in South Africa,” Treemer told Gulf News. “Slowly, over the last four years it’s become easy for me to swim here,” she added.
British athlete Jamie Atherton first completed the swim around the perimeter of Palm Jumeirah in 2009.
