A front-runner in every sense of the term, HRH Prince Alwaleed makes it five successive years in pole position, despite one of his toughest years ever.

With more than 40 investments in ten sectors, he has been hard hit by the global financial crisis, resulting in a sharp drop in the share price of his Kingdom Holding Company (KHC), which is listed on the Saudi Stock Exchange.

Nevertheless, such is the scale of his globe-spanning investments, he still managed to top our rich list in December last year, with a $17.08bn fortune.

Prince Alwaleed’s worldwide influence cannot be underestimated. As the highest-profile businessman in the region, foreign markets hang on his every word.

He formed KHC in 1980, and the company is today one of the world’s largest and most diversified private investment companies, with holdings in a large number of Middle Eastern and international companies.

KHC’s domestic and international portfolio includes investments in a range of sectors, from iconic real estate landmarks and world-famous luxury hotels, to banking, media and information technology, retail business and healthcare, entertainment and tourism. These include stakes held in major companies such as Citigroup, Apple and News Corporation.

For the first time last year, Prince Alwaleed granted Arabian Business access to his private accounts, to display in full detail his financial worth.

The accounts were broken into five areas: first, the publicly traded stocks, which all fall under Kingdom Holding Company. On Dec 2 2008, this was valued at $7.98bn.

Second, the major companies outside KHC (namely Rotana and LBC) whose worth came to $1.6bn, and a smaller engineering concern valued at just $11m.

Third is the Prince’s real estate, valued on December 2 at exactly $3.196bn.

Fourth, other major assets valued at $1.679bn. A large chunk of this, close to $822m, comprises the value of his transportation assets, including planes and cars. The rest is held in his jewellery collection, his investment in a French port and his stakes in Lebanese and Palestinian companies.

The fifth part of his wealth is held entirely in cash at various banks.

I'm Saudi, and I don't think Fayez Al Maliki should make any list here. No disrespect, but he's no where near any influencial status, he's not the best saudi actor, he's not very popular. he's the subject of jokes. it's just that MBC and Rotana keeps enforcing him and other nobodys in our Ramadan after breakfast time! he's not the director, he's not the guy behind this (Prince Al-Waleed)...I'm not sure i'd be interested in reading your lists again if the #10 is a nobody!

I can't deny that I'm a bit surprised with the list... Also surprised that many names are very new to me... But that's a good thing, for then I can search and find out who they are (tried it on some, and it's amazing what people have been achieving)...

But 2 quick remarks:
- Couldn't but be proud to be Lebanese, seeing that 17 names out of the hundred came out of our small country, which is war torn and has one of the lowest populations... I'm just wondering if all our Middle East finds peace, how much can we all achieve!
- One has to still admit that the ratio of men to women is quite high... Although some women made the list, but it's clear that we still live in a society that doesn't give women all the potential to realise themselves...

Great work and I have some more searching to do :)
