A joint venture between Bahrain’s Cebarco and Malaysia’s WCT Engineering has picked up the US $353.4 million (BD128 million) contract to build Bahrain City Centre.
The agreement with MAF Investments-Bahrain will enable construction to begin on the development, which will be the largest mall in Bahrain, and the second largest in the Gulf.
With a completion date set for the second quarter of 2008, Bahrain City Centre will be the first integrated leisure and shopping centre in Bahrain.
The contract includes the engineering, construction, contractor design elements, commissioning and maintenance of the entire project. It’s total value is $530 million.
Located in the Seef District, the 150,000m2 shopping complex will feature over 360 stores. These will include two multi-level international department stores, the largest indoor water park in the region, a 5,600m2 Magic Planet amusement park and the largest cinema in the Middle East, with 20 screens.
The centre will also incorporate two international hotels with a total of 550 rooms and a combined offering of five-star and four-star amenities.
“Bahrainis, residents and visitors will enjoy a unique shopping and leisure experience each time they visit the mall,” said MAF Bahrain general manager, Maher Al Shaer.
“We are confident that Cebarco-WCT is an ideal partner for such a major project, which will improve the standard of living in the country and provide many jobs for Bahrainis.”
Cebarco-WCT chairman Khalid Rahim said the firm had proved itself capable of meeting and surpassing international standards of construction, as demonstrated by the success of the Bahrain F1 circuit.
“We now commit ourselves to MAF Investments-Bahrain and to their team to deliver a truly world class project. This project will be an icon for Bahrain and will boost tourism to the country,” he said.
