Palm wants more Bluetooth software development

Palm has decided to offer new Bluetooth software which it hopes will enable developers to create products based on the wireless standard.

Palm is pushing Bluetooth into the spotlight again after its announcement that it will offer new software to enable developers to create products based on the wireless standard. The company is encouraging software developers to embrace the technology as it sees a great deal of potential there in terms of new uses for handhelds, such as multiplayer gaming and the possibility of allowing multiple handheld owners to work simultaneously on projects. Palm had previously made a Palm V with a Bluetooth add-on to spur developers to create software. However, only 60 of these units were ever handed out. “The new software kit, along with hardware from Palm and others, will be available to a broader base of developers,” said Michael Mace, Palm’s CEO. “A lot of developers have been asking for it.”Last year it was reported that Palm was supposed to release an add-on Bluetooth card that fits into the Secure Digital expansion slot on its m125, m500 and m505 handhelds. But that effort was delayed until this year.
