Potato production in Saudi Arabia continues to thrive, solidifying its status as a key staple, according to the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture.

In 2023, local production reached approximately 621,751 tons, effectively meeting domestic market demands.

The ministry revealed an impressive 87 per cent self-sufficiency rate for potatoes.

This achievement underscores the quality and efficiency of local production, significantly reducing reliance on imports and aligning with the Kingdom’s food security objectives.

During Ramadan, the ministry encourages consumers to prioritise national products, emphasising potatoes as a sustainable and nutritious option for iftar and suhoor meals.

Their high nutritional value supports a balanced diet during the holy month.

Boosting local potato production, alongside other agricultural products, is a core component of the Kingdom’s strategy for agricultural sustainability.

This initiative aims to minimise food waste and enhance consumption efficiency, directly contributing to the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to achieve food security and self-sufficiency in strategic agricultural commodities.
