After the successful implementation of its ‘Best Agricultural Practices’ programmes in Jazan and Al Bahah regions, the Saudi Coffee Company Academy has now launched it in the Asir region.

Asir, situated in the southwestern region of the country, is known for its coffee production. Grown at high altitudes of nearly 3,000 feet above sea level and in the cooler climates in the Soudha mountains, the coffee produced here is known for its quality and flavour.

Similar programmes in Jazan and Baha benefitted over 450 farmers.

The Saudi Coffee Company was launched in 2022 by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), the country’s sovereign wealth fund, and intends to invest $320 million over 10 years. The investment is expected to result in the plantation of over 1.3 million coffee trees and increase the production from 300 tons per year to 2,500 tons per year.

The company later launched the Academy, established to nurture sustainable growth in the industry. It offers training programmes on cultivation, production, sensory evaluation, cafe management, and entrepreneurship.

The ‘Best Agricultural Practices’ programme spreads over six days and involves international experts with the aim to impart advanced skills in coffee cultivation and drying to farmers, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts through workshops and practical sessions.

The programme will cover nursery management, field preparation, shade tree maintenance, and modern fertilisation techniques.

Currently, the national production of the Saudi Khawlani coffee beans comes from the mountainous regions of Jazan, Al Baha, and Aseer. There are more than 2,500 coffee plantations with a combined total of around 400,000 coffee trees.
