The world’s biggest oil company, Saudi Arabia’s Aramco, has launched a research centre to develop low-carbon solutions for the energy sector.
The hub, located within the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), will utilise artificial intelligence and machine learning, the company said in a release.
“The Aramco Research Center at KAUST offers a unique opportunity to strengthen our collaboration with KAUST and accelerate the development of cutting-edge technologies that will contribute to a low-carbon future,” Ahmad Al-Khowaiter, the company’s chief technology officer, said.

It comes as energy companies increasingly face a “dual challenge of delivering sustainability and reliability,” he added.
“The critical research undertaken at this new facility will help us meet our obligations to customers and energy consumers worldwide, while also supporting our ambition of reaching operational net-zero emissions by 2050,” Al-Khowaiter explained.
Researchers, engineers, and scientists who will work at the new research centre will focus on new technologies in carbon capture, low-carbon hydrogen/ammonia, non-metallics, e-fuels, liquids-to-chemicals, and advanced transport technologies.
