Dubai’s DEWA and ENOC have teamed up to develop hydrogen fuelling stations for vehicles in the UAE.

DEWA and ENOC will conduct a joint feasibility study for the establishment, development, and operation of a pilot project for the use of hydrogen in mobility.

Hydrogen powered vehicles are a type of zero-emission vehicle that run on hydrogen fuel cells instead of traditional gasoline or battery power.

The fuel cells convert hydrogen into electricity, which then powers the vehicle’s electric motor. This results in a clean and efficient form of transportation, as the only byproduct produced is water vapour.

The development of hydrogen powered vehicles has seen a significant increase in recent years, with several major automobile manufacturers investing in the technology.

These vehicles have the potential to solve the range anxiety issue associated with electric vehicles, as hydrogen fuel cells provide a longer driving range.

Additionally, the refuelling time for hydrogen vehicles is comparable to that of gasoline vehicles, making the transition to this technology smoother for consumers.

However, the lack of hydrogen fuelling infrastructure, which makes it difficult for consumers to refuel their vehicles is seen as an issue.

The DEWA and ENOC partnership was signed at the World Government Summit 2023 being held in the UAE.

The project will utilise DEWA’s existing green hydrogen production facility at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park and ENOC’s knowledge of the fuel market to build a hydrogen fuelling station and contribute to the Dubai Green Mobility Initiative 2030.

The project supports the UAE’s hosting of the COP28 and the country’s goal to develop the hydrogen economy and open local markets to hydrogen vehicles.

Both DEWA and ENOC aim to support the vision of a sustainable and green future and to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in the UAE by 2050.

Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, said: “DEWA and ENOC Group have a strategic partnership that supports the vision and directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to promote as a global model in sustainability and green transformation.

“We are pleased to sign this MoU with ENOC Group to use green hydrogen, which is one of the environment friendly energy sources and represents one of the pillars of a sustainable future that depends on accelerating the transition to net-zero carbon emissions to achieve the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and Dubai Net-zero Carbon Strategy 2050.”

Saif Humaid Al Falasi, CEO of ENOC Group, said: “ENOC Group’s partnership with DEWA follows the announcement of 2023 as the ‘Year of Sustainability’ by President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

“It also aligns with the Dubai Economic Agenda ‘D33’ that was announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

“The agreement underpins the Group’s efforts to nurture public-private partnerships to achieve Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 as well as lay the foundation for a green economy and lead the adoption of sustainable energy solutions.”

Dubai will introduce hybrid-powered cars with hydrogen fuel capability to its fleet by 2027, it has been reported.
