Amazon expands in Saudi Arabia with massive storage facility in Riyadh

The facility has a storage capacity of 2.7 million cubic feet housing over nine million products

Amazon in Saudi Arabia has made a major move towards expansion with the opening of a massive 2.7 million cubic feet storage facility which can houses over nine million products.

The fulfillment centre has opened in Riyadh and will double Amazon’s total storage capacity in the kingdom.

Eng. Suliman Almazroua, Chief Executive Officer of the National Industrial Development and Logistics Programme (NIDLP), said, “Saudi Arabia has made remarkable progress in developing world-class infrastructure and business-enabling policies that aim to place the kingdom at the forefront of investor attractiveness.

“Amazon’s expansion supports Saudi Arabia’s logistics sector – one of NIDLP’s four key sectors – bringing the latest innovations and technologies in e-commerce operations to the country. The new fulfillment center in Riyadh will further unlock the value of the kingdom’s resources by empowering local startups and entrepreneurs with improved global connectivity and access to new markets.”

Saud bin Rashid Al-Askar, the Deputy Governor of Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO), said, “As Saudi Arabia progresses towards sustainable development in tandem with regional and international markets, we affirm the company’s keenness, in cooperation with other sectors, to ensure consumer safety by conforming its products received through e-commerce. We are happy to see Amazon’s expansion in the kingdom as the company continues its efforts to bring global standards and processes to the e-commerce sector in Saudi Arabia.”

The new facility with its enhanced capacity will allow independent sellers to scale their businesses online, in addition to reaching a wider customer base, sellers can now take advantage of the centre that will allow them to pick, pack and ship orders through Amazon.

The facility incorporates solutions by artificial intelligence, machine learning and more than two and a half kilometres of conveyance equipment to ensure seamless operations. Additionally, the facility is powered by 100 percent electricity including heating and hot water systems, avoiding the use of fossil fuel combustibles and with energy efficiency as a top priority.
