A total of 1,400 traffic violations were recorded within 90 days of the establishment of Dubai Tram, according to Dubai’s traffic police.
Colonel Jamal Al Banai, acting director of the General Department of Traffic of the Dubai Police told the Khaleej Times that the violations were detected by the 269 transport security officials and 16 patrols who have been assigned to monitor the operation of the tram 24 hours a day.
Dubai Police introduced stiff penalties for offences related to the tram, which was inaugurated in November last year. A driver who jumps a red light at the tram line, without causing an accident, will be fined between $544 (AED2,000) and $1,361 (AED5,000). The fine increases for accidents that lead to injury or death.
Al Banai said pedestrians also face a fine of $272 (AED1,000) if they cross from non-designated areas on the tram line. He said anyone wishing report violations can call Dubai Police’s toll free number 800 4353.
In December, Dubai Tram suffered its first accident when a car crashed into one of its trains at an intersection in Jumeirah Beach Residence.
