DoP plans to operate cargo flights

The Indian Department of Post (DoP) is planning to operate a daily cargo flight to transport parcels, couriers, express deliveries and letters to seven states in Northeast India.

The Indian Department of Post (DoP) is planning to operate a daily cargo flight to transport parcels, couriers, express deliveries and letters to seven states in Northeast India.

The governmental agency has leased a Boeing 737 from Air India for the service, which is being delivered from America following its conversion into a cargo plane.

“India Post will fly this cargo plane daily from Kolkata in the morning, drop courier packets and parcels at Agartala and Imphal, and then return to Kolkata in the evening,” stated a senior DoP official.

“This will be the first time that a dedicated cargo plane will carry courier packets and letters to these seven states. It generally takes four to seven days to deliver letters and parcels to these states, but the new cargo service will steeply reduce this time,” he added.

The maintenance and operation of the aircraft has been contracted to Air India, which will also provide pilots. In addition, a second freighter is expected to join the fleet towards the end of 2007.

“The potential is huge and the new service will help DoP serve this region better,” said the official.
