Egypt has charted out the final route of a planned 15 billion Egyptian pound ($2.6bn) metro line in Cairo and plans to begin building it in September 2012, a newspaper cited officials as saying on Sunday.
The line, Cairo’s fourth, would run from the north western suburb of Sixth of October, passing the site of a new Egyptian museum near the pyramids of Giza, to the El Malek El Saleh district a kilometre south of the city centre, Al Shorouk said.
It would take seven years to complete, it cited Transport Minister Alaa as saying.
The ministry had put together a plan for long-term financing that Egypt will present to Japan, it quoted an unnamed ministry official as saying. Japan has already drawn up an economic feasibility study of the line, the official added.
A second section to be built later would extend from El Malek El Saleh through the old Islamic quarter to the suburb of Nasr City, the newspaper cited Fahmy as saying.
