Oman to open $54.4mn Muscat airport runway in 2023: Report

Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is also working on other aviation projects to boost the sector

Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has confirmed that construction on the southern runway and taxiways of Muscat International Airport is progressing quickly, according to a report by the Oman Observer, which cited a media briefing.

The report said that the airport is currently undergoing development at a cost of over RO21 million ($54.4 million).

The new runway, which is the second of its kind in Muscat, is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

According to the report, representatives of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) also mentioned that they are currently working on various projects, including conducting consulting studies for the first phase of constructing Musandam Airport and enhancing the National Aviation Strategy 2040, among others.

The ‘Ithmar’ initiative of the Omani government also intends to make significant investments in the civil aviation industry, primarily to improve the country’s aviation infrastructure, Hamid Al Brashdi, Director General of Strategic Planning at the CAA said.

In addition, the authority has granted Oman Air to re-operate 737 Max, adding that the revenues increased by RO26.4 million ($68.5 million approximately) or 58 percent in 2022.

The total air traffic in the Sultanate of Oman in 2022 saw 470, 809 flights, and the number of aircraft crossing the airspace was 386, 391, the authority pointed out.

The authority also granted Oman Aviation Academy (OAA) the first Approved Training Organisation (ATO) certificate in 2022.

In January 2022, it was reported that the Tender Board awarded projects worth RO252.5 million ($655.8 million) in 2021, compared to projects with RO392.2 ($1 billion) in 2020.

The projects covered key sectors such as airports, health, education, and roads, according to the report.

However, in 2023, the Tender Board assigned a project to cargo building facilities and the hangar at Muscat Airports and Salalah airports, to complete electromechanical works and equipment-related works.

The project included carrying out the required repairs associated with them, operating and checking the systems and training employees to operate and maintain the hardware and software. The is estimated cost at the time was RO24.6 million ($63.9 million).

The board also assigned a project to rehabilitate the southern runway and air corridors of Muscat International Airport at a cost of RO21,77,000, the report said, on a 16-month implementation period.
