The Middle East could be in line for a new breed of adventure-orientated resorts and properties, following the successful opening of the Extreme Hotel concept in Cape Town, South Africa.

The 130-room property – a world first – is a joint venture between Extreme Group, Istithmar Hotels, one of the world’s leading hotel investment and asset management firms, and Protea Hotels, an African hotel operator.

“We are currently conducting feasibility studies in the region and the UAE for a suitable site for an Extreme Hotel,” said Joe Sita, CEO, Istithmar Hotels. “Dubai is [home to] a thriving and unconventional tourist attraction scene in the Middle East for enthusiastic visitors from around the globe. It would be a good location for such a new concept of hotels, given the abundant access into the Gulf itself [for scuba diving] and the desert [for dune sports], both of which provide a unique experience for devotees of extreme sports.”

The alliance has signed head of terms (HOT) documents and secured initial funding for up to

US $393 million to create and roll out the new hotel chain, with subsequent hotels pending now the Cape Town property has opened its doors.

The Extreme Hotel in Cape Town features a five-star climbing wall outside the hotel, from the second floor to the roof.

All of the hotels will reflect the lifestyle where they are situated and provide mid-range affordable accommodation.

Future locations will be chosen according to three areas of interest; surf, snow and urban, where extreme sports are part of the culture.
