Audio specialist Sennheiser has launched the most expensive headphones in the world for sale in the Middle East, following a global launch earlier this year.

The Sennheiser HE 1 headphones are priced at €50,000 – around $50,000 – and the design can be customised for an additional cost.

Experts at the century-old German company spent the past 12 years developing the headphones, which are an upgrade to Sennheiser’s legendary Orpheus that was launched in 1991 and cost ‎£13,000 ($16,427) at the time.

The HE 1 is intended to further “shape the future of audio”, Sennheiser said on Wednesday.

It is an electrostatic headphone system that uses an innovative amplifier concept that combines a traditional tube amplifier with a transistor one.

Set on a Carrara marble base that holds the exposed tubes, the headphones are crafted by hand in Sennheiser’s Hamburg headquarters.

“I am very proud of this absolutely exceptional product,” said Dr. Andreas Sennheiser, co-CEO and founder of Sennheiser. “It is able to deceive our senses in a completely unique way, creating the perfect illusion of being directly immersed in the sound.”

The headphones were launched to the Middle East market in Dubai on Wednesday, and will be made to order.

Buyers have the option of customising the design, for example by adding jewellery or changing the colour.

Andreas Sennheiser told Arabian Business in an interview that one buyer in Japan had requested the headphones be entirely clad in pure jade.
