Football fans from across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region became the first visitors to Qatar’s Lusail Stadium on Sunday, a statement from the Qatar press office said.
The 80,000-seater stadium, officially opened its doors to stage the Lusail Super Cup 2022, and will host the FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar final in December.
Largest of its kind in the region, Lusail stadium is set in the smart city Lusail, and spans across 38 square kilometres and four islands.
“Lusail city is a treat for visitors, with the striking architecture that marks its horizons and the open spaces that offer a retreat from the city. We are thrilled that our visitors from the region can get a sneak peak at what Qatar has to offer and gear up for even more adventure and beautiful sightings later this year,” Maryam Al Maslmani, public relations and communication department at Qatar Tourism said.
Also known as Qatar’s largest sustainable real estate development, visitors in the city can access theme parks, shopping and dining destinations – all of which are nearby.
Visitors in the smart city, can also contribute to zero carbon travel to and around the city with Lusail’s new tram network, and 76 kilometre of planned cycle and pedestrian tracks, which are easily accessible by the Doha Metro (the Red line), the statement said.
In August, the Lusail stadium was recognised by the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD) for its sustainability features.
The football venue was rated with five stars under the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS), FIFA said in a statement.
