A Bahraini MP has called for the minimum age women in the kingdom can get married to be raised from 15 to 18 years old.
Currently the minimum age for men to marry in Bahrain is 18-year-old, while for women it is 15, which Fatima Al Kooheji, a member of the Women and Children’s Committee at the Shoura Council, said was unconstitutional.
“The difference in the age requirements for men and women is not constitutional since Article 18 of the constitution states that there is no discrimination based on sex,” she was quoted as saying by Gulf News.
She said young girls marrying too young were not prepared for the realities of marriage and motherhood.
“The new minimum age of 18 allows young women to develop physically and mentally and permits them to finish their high school education. So far, education is compulsory only in the elementary schools, and we will work hard to ensure that it is extended to the high schools,” she added.
