Qatar has bought a $32 million Viennese neoclassical palace in the Austrian capital Vienna, where it will accommodate its ambassador.
The Palais Clam-Gallas, which was built in 1834 as a summer residence for a German prince, is set on 11 acres of grounds in the heart of Vienna.
France bought the property in 1952 and since 1981 it has been home to the French Institute of Vienna.
Pascal Teixeira, ambassador of France in Austria, who signed the purchase contract for the French Institute’s new premises in Vienna, previously said the upkeep of the palace was proving to be costly.
“The Embassy of Qatar, the new owner of the building, has pledged to restore its former glory by making it fully restored by Austrian companies known for their professionalism in restoration,” a French embassy statement said.
