The Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTNH) has earmarked three sites across the kingdom for tourism investment.
The three sites are to be dedicated to a new kind of tourism in Saudi Arabia – environmental and adventure tourism, according to Arab News.
The sites are to offer different types of accommodation, such as hostels, to attract hikers and nature lovers to these areas.
The first of the three investment sites identified by the commission includes one in Al Ula city, north of Madinah.
This is to include a camp and 350,000 square metre “eco” hostel within the Sharan National Park.
The second site is in the city of Souq Okaz, Taif, planned to have an environmental camp covering an area of 115, 000 sq m. The site is close to major cities in the Makkah region and Taif airport as well, the newspaper reported.
The third site is in Uruq Bani Ma’arid, in Najran. The commission plans to create an environmental desert camp resort across an area of around 50,000 sq m between the Al Dawaser Valley and Najran.
The scheme will reportedly comprise 24 tents and environmentally friendly infrastructure.
The commission plans to tender the sites to the private sector to take on management of the new tourism projects.
The plans are intended to stimulate investment in the kingdom’s fledgling tourism industry.
