A British tourist was stopped from bringing a toy bomb on a flight from Bali to Doha, causing the flight to return to the terminal, where he was detained and questioned for 24 hours, according to UK media reports.
The tourist, named as Davide Fogli, a graphic designer born in Turin but holds a British passport, attempted to bring the toy bomb on board the Qatar Airways flight at Ngurah Rai International when he was stopped by officials. He explained that he was bringing the toy home for a New Year’s Eve party.
The toy, which had all the hallmarks of a bomb with sticks of dynamite and timer attached, was left behind by Fogli before checking in but, when the bomb was found by the airport’s general manager, he ordered that the British man should be questioned further.
The Qatar Airways flight had already left the terminal and began taxiing down the runway when it had to return to allow Fogli be escorted off the flight. He was taken into custody and questioned by officers.
Fogli and his travel companion were eventually allowed to resume their journey home over 24 hours later after officials cleared him to leave.
“We are releasing them now,” police chief Reinhard Habonaran Nainggolan told The Telegraph newspaper. “We have found no indication of suspicious reasons, he just bought a toy. But since airport authority filed a report, we had to do a follow up.”
