A group of workers from Vietnam have been forced to return home from Saudi Arabia after their employer failed to pay them, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs’ Overseas Labour Department.
Seven of the 20 workers, who are from the northeastern province of Bac Kan, arrived back in Vietnam on December 28, and the remaining 13 returning on December 31, reported news website VnExpress.
They arrived in Saudi Arabia in April following an agreement by Hanoi-based Thang Long International Cooperation and Investment JSC, (Thang Long OSC) to work for a local company under a two-year contract.
But just over one month later, the Saudi Arabian company ran into financial difficulties meaning they could not pay them, which led to the workers going on strike and seeking help from the Vietnamese embassy in the kingdom.
The embassy repatriated the workers with the help of Thang Long OSC, which refunded the fees they charged the workers before sending them to Saudi Arabia.
There are around 16,000 Vietnamese labourers working in the kingdom on construction sites, factories or in local homes.
