Caldera has unveiled a fully functional snapshot of its 64-bit Linux for Intel Itanium based system. However, those wanting to get their hands on the enterprise class server platform will have to wait, as general availability of OpenLinux Server 64 is not expected until the third quarter 2001.
OpenLinux Server 64 should provide high-quality Internet services such as web servers, file/print servers and network infrastructure, as well as delivering a platform for Linux solutions.
“Itanium systems represent the next generation of high-end computing platforms,” said Ransom Love, CEO of Caldera. “OpenLinux Server 64 supplements Caldera’s range of platforms that span from desktop to data center. As a Linux leader, we have the expertise to provide an operating system such as OpenLinux Server 64 that exploits Itanium’s capacity of supporting mission-critical business applications,” he said.
Victor Krutul, manager of software programs, Intel, added “Caldera OpenLinux Server 64 will provide business-focused customers with a smooth migration path to deploy Itanium systems as their application needs grow.”
This announcement follows Caldera’s recent deployment of its AIX 5L technology – a Unix system solution for Itanium based systems.
